There has been much talk of using X-rays to look into double seams. Let's take a moment to discuss this new application of X-ray technology and the implications it may have on double seaming.

Initial test data suggest there is much more internal variation in the double seam than was ever suspected.

Is this the case?

Is the variation a symptom of relatively poor resolution and/or repeatability (when compared to conventional cross-section systems)?

Could this explain why it has been so difficult to predict the internal double seam dimensions with getter accuracy than +/- 10%?

Have the “experts” always known about it; or at least quietly suspected it?

At the moment, the primary advantage to the X-ray systems is return on investment (ROI) based on labor reduction. Would canners be more comfortable with a conventional double seam inspection system which was fully automated?

These are exciting ideas which certainly provide excellent opportunity for discussion.

Best regards,
Alex
